GL English preparation for QE Barnet
The safest English plan treats reading comprehension and technical English as connected but separate skills. A child can understand a passage and still lose marks through a spelling, punctuation, grammar or transfer decision.
Read the whole passage for support
- Read once for the situation, characters or information rather than trying to memorise every line.
- For a retrieval question, return to the relevant sentence and match the answer to the passage wording.
- For an inference, ask what the full passage supports, not what one vivid phrase suggests.
- For vocabulary, replace the word in its sentence and check the meaning and tone.
- For figurative language or authorial effect, name what the image changes for the reader.
Worked example Evidence beats a plausible story
A character checks the same locked gate each morning, notices fresh marks near the hinge and hides a key from the other children. Which conclusion is best supported?
- The character dislikes every other child.
- The character is investigating access to the gate.
- The gate definitely leads to a treasure room.
- The character has already opened the gate many times.
Why this works: The second answer uses all three clues and stops at the supported conclusion.
Why the tempting route fails: The other answers add motives, outcomes or history that the passage does not provide.
Make technical English a precision check

Use a small weekly English loop
- One short comprehension set: record retrieval, inference, vocabulary and effect separately.
- One technical set: mix spelling, punctuation and sentence completion rather than drilling only the easiest family.
- One review session: rewrite the reason for every wrong choice in the child's own words.
- One transfer check: mark a separate answer grid slowly, then compare the grid with the recorded answers.
Keep the wider 476-question practice bank for targeted repetition. The goal is not to finish a number for its own sake. The goal is to make the next decision more accurate and more independent.
